7 Technical Fixes to Speed Up Your Wix E-Commerce Store

In e-commerce, every second of delay correlates directly to a drop in conversion rates. If your website takes longer than three seconds to load, you aren’t just losing a session; you’re also likely losing that customer to a competitor.
Most speed and performance issues on a Wix site aren’t caused by the platform itself, but by how the store is configured. By addressing a few specific technical areas, you can significantly reduce load times and create a smoother shopping experience.
Here are seven technical fixes to optimise your store’s performance.
1. Ensure Source Image Files Are Optimised

Images typically account for the largest portion of a page’s total file size. High-quality product photography is necessary for sales, but large JPEGs can heavily impact your efforts to speed up your Wix website.
Wix converts to WebP automatically. WebP provides superior compression compared to JPEG or PNG, maintaining visual clarity at a much smaller file size. But you should ensure your source image files are optimised before uploading. That way, the browser can render your products almost instantly.
2. Conduct an Audit of Third-Party Integrations
The Wix App Market offers a wide range of tools, but every one of your Wix store integrations adds external scripts to your site. Each script requires the browser to make a separate request to an outside server before the page is considered “loaded.”
If you have multiple apps for pop-ups, social feeds, and currency converters, they can compete for bandwidth. Review your installed apps and remove any that aren’t providing measurable value. You can use the Wix Speed Dashboard to identify which specific scripts are slowing down your interactive time. Plus, whenever possible, use native Wix features, as they are integrated into the core code and do not require external calls that slow down your Wix store pages.
3. Prioritise Above-the-Fold Loading
The “Above the Fold” area is the portion of the website visible to a user before they scroll. If this section contains heavy elements—like a high-bitrate video or an uncompressed hero image—the perceived load time will be high.
Keep the initial view as light as possible. Use a simple, well-compressed image for your main banner and move heavy videos or large galleries further down the page. This allows the critical Wix store design elements to appear immediately while the rest of the content loads in the background.
4. Streamline Your Global Header
Because the header appears on every page of your online shop, any “bloat” located here affects your entire site. Complex animations, large logo files, or embedded social media widgets in the header can delay the rendering of every product page.
Ensure your logo is an optimised SVG or WebP file and keep navigation menus simple. By reducing the number of elements in the header, you allow the browser to focus its resources on the specific content of the page the user is trying to view.
5. Standardise Product Image Dimensions

Consistency is key to a professional Wix store set-up. Uploading images of varying sizes can cause the layout to “jump” as it loads, a metric search engines track as Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).
Set a standard product image size—typically between 1000px and 1200px on the longest side. This size is large enough for a “zoom” feature but small enough to keep the site responsive. Consistent dimensions help the browser pre-calculate the space needed for images, leading to a more stable and faster loading experience.
6. Evaluate Your Font Choices
Every custom font you select adds a download requirement for the visitor’s browser. While unique typography can enhance your brand, using three or four different weights of a custom font can add several hundred kilobytes to your page size.
Try to limit your site to two font families. For body text, consider using system fonts like Helvetica or Arial. Since these are already installed on the user’s device, the browser doesn’t have to download anything new, which can shave valuable milliseconds off your Wix site’s load time.
7. Utilise Internal Linking for Pre-fetching
Wix hosting is highly optimised, but you can further improve the user experience through strategic internal linking. Modern browsers can pre-fetch data for a page when a user hovers over a link, anticipating their next move.
Ensure your site has a clean, logical structure. When your Wix store design makes it easy for the browser to predict the user’s path, transitions between pages feel much faster. This creates a snappy feel that keeps customers engaged as they move through your catalogue.
